September 6-12: Amarillo, TX to Albuquerque, NM
September 13-19: Albuquerque, NM to Oatman, AZ
Branson Reynolds made his first trip from Oklahoma to California with his parents on Route 66 in the summer of 1947, when he was just a few months old. This trip became an annual event for Branson for the next 20 years. Today’s renewed fascination with this historic route is the foundation for a wonderful journey of photography and nostalgia along a portion of America’s most famous and most loved highway.
This trip covers some of the most famous historic sites and best preserved portions of the old highway, and can be taken either as one continuous 14 day trip from Amarillo to Oatman, the last town in Arizona before the California border, or as two separate 7 day trips, one from Amarillo to Albuquerque, and the other from Albuquerque to Oatman.
Along the way we will immerse ourselves in the memories and history of the old road. We’ll drive the remaining segments of the original highway, eat in vintage Route 66 establishments such as the Big Texan, La Posada, Grand Canyon Diner, and Joe and Aggie’s Cafe, and visit trading posts and antique shops which are full of Route 66 memorabilia. We’ll spend our nights in Amarillo, Tucumcari, Santa Rosa, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Gallup, Holbrook, Flagstaff, and Seligman , where we’ll enjoy the evenings photographing neons after full days of shooting historic sites and Americana in and between the towns. However we relate to this famous highway, variously known as the Pontiac Trail, Osage Indian Trail, Grand Canyon Route, National Old Trails Highway, the Mother Road, the Glory Road, or the Main Street of America, Route 66 still evokes a sense of romance and adventure. We’ll immerse ourselves in memories, nostalgia, and wonderful photographic opportunities, and we’ll slow down and escape the fast-paced-rat-race of Interstate 40 and return for a few days to the more peaceful pace of an earlier time.
These trips can be taken separately or together as one two-week trip from Amarillo, TX to Kingman, AZ. A 10% discount is given for those taking both trips consecutively.
