Highway 50:
America's
"Loneliest Highway"
Beginning i an unlikely
setting, the fantasy world of Las Vegas is the starting point
for a journey into some of the loneliest lands in North America.
Soon the two-lane highway beyond the "Next Gas 110 Miles"
sign shrinks to a thin line as it crosses the desert basin
and disappears over the next mountain range. This thin line
leads to a photographic adventure as we head west from Ely
on through Eureka, Austin, Fallon, and eventually into one
of the most authentic and wildest towns of the "Old West",
Virginia City. This trip is "Americana" all the
way, and, though lonely, the scenery is spectacular.

combined with the Virginia City, Bodie, Mono Lake trip for
two weeks of continual adventure.

Virginia
City, Ghost Town of Bodie and Mono Lake
Virginia
City , Nevada , was one of the most famous towns of the “Wild
West”. One of the few that was never destroyed by fire, its
board-walk streets and moody saloons add a feel of the bye-gone
days to the Western Americana of this lively town. From here
on to Bodie, the most famous Ghost Town of them all. Preserved
in a state of "arrested decay", the well preserved
buildings and cob-web veiled windows opening into the still-furnished
rooms provide outstanding photo opportunities and a unique
juxtaposition to Virginia City . Then on to the mysterious
Mono Lake and it's wonderfully photogenic tufa formations.
This trip is a variety of photographic delights of scenic
beauty, history, and “ Americana ”.
This trip can be
combined with the Virginia City, Bodie, Mono Lake trip for

Fall
in the Rocky Mountains
Several years ago when I was working on a book titled "Among
the Aspens", I stopped in a ranger station in the Sawtooth
Mountains of Idaho and asked the ranger where he would suggest
I go to photograph majestic mountains and golden aspen forests.
"Go down around Durango in southwest Colorado. My wife
and I go there each year to see it---there's nowhere else
like it. I've lived here for 30 years and I agree.

Cochise found refuge. And we'll search out the abundant “
