Talented
models and the inspiring natural beauty of the Southwest's
mountains and deserts provide the setting for a unique photographic
experience. The model-released sessions are appropriate for
photographers of all ability levels and for work with any
camera format or type of film. The goal of the workshops,
beyond providing an opportunity for you to return home with
outstanding photographs, is for all of us -- the participants,
models and instructors -- to have fun, make new friends, and
together make a little more progress in developing our creativity
and talents. |

Badlands
of NW New Mexico
These workshops will be based out of Farmington, New Mexico,
in the very northwest corner of the state. We will work in
two different areas, each of which have some of the most incredible,
yet very different, rock formations imaginable. The color
and sensuous forms of these formations make wonderful props
and backgrounds for working with the female figure. The locations
are also perfect for working with the incredible late afternoon
western light, and for silhouettes.

Ghost Towns
This workshop will be based out of Ouray, Colorado, which
is an hour-and-a-half north of Durango. The focus of this
trip will be working with the female figure among the abandoned
buildings and ghost-towns in the San Juan mountains around
Ouray and Silverton. Many of these are wonderful old structures,
and in addition to “normal” shooting, we will
also work with ghost-images. Models in filmy gowns walking
down stairs or standing beside empty bay windows make very
unique ghost-images, and we’ve never had more fun or
created more unique images than we have been doing in these
settings. There are also ample opportunities to work with
the models outside among the aspens or beside streams. We
will spend the nights in Ouray, where we can soak each day
in the outdoor hot-tubs which are fed by natural hot-springs.

MODELS
Good models are essential to the success of these workshops,
and the ones we work with are intelligent, talented and sincerely
interested in helping you obtain the images you envision. Many
of the best photographs from previous sessions started with
their creative suggestions. We have all worked together before,
which is important to the flow of the workshops. The models
are also lovely, fun to be with, and people you will consider
friends by the end of your visit. |

MODEL
RELEASES
Limited model releases will be provided which grants non-professionals
permission to use the photos personally for things such as private
display, competition, inclusion in portfolios or books of personal
work, exhibition in a public gallery, and limited sales in ways
consistent with galleries. For professionals seeking full model
releases, an agreement must be reached between the photographer
and the model. |

STRUCTURE
OF WORKSHOPS
We begin the workshops by getting together the Sunday evening
before the session begins to get acquainted and to review
images from previous sessions. Each participant is encouraged
to bring examples of their photography, which always inspires
new ideas. Workshop days generally end late, but we have leisure
mornings with plenty of time for breakfast, reviewing the
previous day's results, and if we're in Durango, for enjoying
the town. We plan to shoot between five and seven hours each
day, which we have found is plenty for everyone.
Depending
on the season and circumstances, we may not head for the shooting
location until the afternoon, thus utilizing the best possible
light.
The Southwest light is spectacular, and we will work primarily
with natural light, using reflectors extensively to alter
and enhance it.. We will discuss the use of fill-flash, filters,
multiple-exposures, slow shutter speeds, and any other topics
that you are interested in. Assistance and instruction in
the use of equipment is available if needed, but most participants
are proficient in the use of their photographic equipment,
and are looking more for locations, models, assistance with
lighting, and suggestions on posing and composition. |

This leads to sessions where
the shooting goes smoothly with a lot of active, creative
input. There is rarely a ratio greater than three photographers
per model, and workshops are limited to from six to nine participants,
which insures uncrowded shooting and ample opportunities for
everyone to work with their own ideas. Our primary interest
is in working with the female form in a natural setting.
To a limited
extent we experiment with props such as different types and
colors of materials, umbrellas, cow skulls, and anything else
we think of, and you are encouraged to suggest any ideas that
you would be interested in working with.
